We Believe: Week 3
Opening Question
What does it mean to call someone a spitting image? Have you ever know someone who is a spitting image of someone else?
Background
See Week 1
Creed Section
Consider this portion of the Creed as we read the Bible passage from Matthew:
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.
Read
Matthew 16:13-16
Ask someone to read this aloud, and then allow silence for everyone to reflect on the passage.
Discussion
1. Where there any words that need defining or any questions other questions? Does anyone have a translation that paints a different picture?
2. How does Matthew 16 relate to this week’s section of the Nicene Creed?
3. There are are no wrong answers for the next question - these are things that you have heard, but not necessarily what you believe - what have you heard about who Jesus is? How are these responses similar or different to what we read in the Creed and in Matthew today?
4. The Creed teaches that Jesus is 100% God and 100% man, the spitting image of his Father. How can believing this about Jesus change the way that we live and the way that we talk about him?
*Optional: Going Deeper
You are welcome to use this question in your group discussion or to carry it with you throughout the week to answer on your own. What does it mean to call Jesus Lord (of your life, your family, your career, the Church, of the world…)?
Prayer
Close in prayer for one another’s journeys of belief and any other prayer requests that are offered to the group.
- You can find the Nicene Creed in the Notes section of The Gathering Church app. Try to find a time to pray the Creed once on your own or with your family this week.
