We Believe: Week 10

Opening Question
When have you been a part of a group, team or club? What did you have to do to join? Was the process of joining worth being a part of the group?

Background
See Week 1

Creed Section
Consider this portion of the Creed as we read the Bible passage from Hebrews:
We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

Read
1 Peter 3:18-22
Ask someone to read this aloud, and then allow silence for everyone to reflect on the passage.

Discussion
1. Were there any words that need defining or any questions other questions? Does anyone have a translation that paints a different picture?
2. How does 1 Peter 3 relate to this week’s section of the Nicene Creed?
3. Do you know the story of Noah? Ask some in the group to summarize the story or read Genesis 6 & 7. Why do you think Peter links the story of Noah to the new hope of baptism in Jesus’ name?
4. Often, baptism is misused as a membership requirement into each new church body, but our Creed is clear about the need for one baptism. Between the Creed and 1 Peter 3, what is the real purpose of Baptism? How has or can Baptism save you?

*Optional: Going Deeper
You are welcome to use this question in your group discussion or to carry it with you throughout the week to answer on your own. Read Ephesians 2:1-10. Paul is speaking of the life we have all lived before knowing Jesus as our savior. Do you believe you have been or could be truly forgiven for the things in your past? Take some time to look up the work redemption and think about what that word really means to you, how it can change your life.

If you have not been baptized and you want to know more about being forgiven of your sins, what it means to become part of God’s family, and how to walk in a new life, please reach out to Jon Henson or Mikah Alge.

Prayer
Close in prayer for one another’s journeys of belief and any other prayer requests that are offered to the group.
