Colossians: Jesus Above All - Week 8

These questions are written to be used during our house church meetings in Katy on Tuesday nights and in Sugar Land on Wednesday nights. If you are unable to attend a gathering this week, we encourage you to use these questions at home to sink more deeply into this series on Colossians.

Icebreaker
How do you react to new or challenging information? Are you someone who researches, asks questions, avoids, observes…? Why do you think this is your tendency?

Background
This is an epistle (or letter) written by Paul in the early 50’s while he was in prison. The letter was intended for the church in Colossae which was planted by Epaphras. This Colossian church plant was in the middle of a pagan city with a high population of Jews. The main purpose of this letter is found in chapter 2 verse 8, to protect the church from man-made philosophies and traditions.

Read and Reflect
Read Colossians 3:18-4:1 (click here for a link to the passage)
Don't be hesitant to use a dictionary or online resource (like Biblegateway.com) to look up any words you don't understand or names you are not familiar with. However, if you find yourself unsure of the message or lesson of a passage, we encourage you to bring this passage to God in prayer. Ask questions and sit with the biggest point of resistance while you rest, work, and commute. Bring your thoughts to your family or a trusted friend. Let God speak through his Word, through your meditations, and through the community of faith.

Discussion
  1. What is the passage saying? Try to restate it in your own words. What do you find interesting or what causes more questions?
  2. Why do you think context might be important for understanding this passage? What context do you feel like you need? If context is necessary to understand a passage do you think that means it can apply to us today?
  3. What do you think “as is fitting in the Lord” in verse 18 means? Does it only apply to wives or do you see the idea elsewhere in the passage?

Go Deeper
  • In what areas are verses 23-24 speaking into your life? Is there an area of your life where you have closed God off? Do you allow his character to transform you at work, in certain (challenging) relationships, in the community, online…?

Youth Discussion!
The children are working the the Bible using The Biggest Storybook Bible. If you miss a week or just want to know what the kids are doing so that you can follow up at home, check this new section out each week!
  1. How old do you think Abraham was when Isaac, his son, was born? How old do you think Sarah was?
  2. Read The Storybook Bible, pages 48-53. (If you need a copy for your family, ask Jon, Mikah, or Hannah!)
  3. Watch God’s Story: Abraham and Sarah (click here for the YouTube link).
  4. What have you learned about God today?
  5. What are some promises that God has kept in your life?

Prayer
Remember to pray for the families in your house church and the people on your Top Five cards. Consider using the Family Prayer Service (click here for the link) found in the app to wrap up your night.
